Fragrant Trees & Shrubs
LATE CORNELIAN CHERRY
Cornus mas
$2.00
Most of our trees/shrubs of this species ripen their fruits in late summer and they soon drop or are eaten by animal or man. But in a long hedgerow planted for wildlife in which there are Aronia, Lonicera, Viburnum, Euonymus and others there are a number of Cornelian Cherries which still retain their fruit as I write this in late December. Considered a four season shrub for its ornamental characteristics year round, this form is especially attractive when the leafless branches of bright red cherries are capped with snow. The peeling bark and very early flowers carry it through to spring. Zone 4.
