Also known as Lilac or Fringed Pink. Being one of the favorite plants of Linnaeus, he gave it its special name. A sadly neglected plant and one of the most indispensable for cottage and fragrance gardens, with its large fringed lilac petals with a green eye and soft sweet far-reaching perfume. I have detected it over 50 yards away on a warm summer evening. The only near identical fragrance that comes to mind is that of the Chinese Catalpa, C. ovata. Biennial to perennial if deadheaded. Will self-sow.
