A modest little grass which, owing to the compound coumarin, has a powerful scent of new-mown hay (also present in woodruff, melilot and the flowers of sweet alyssum). The refreshing pungent smell is not apparent until the grass has dried, when it is tied in bunches like melilot to scent linen or keep moths away. Jefferson included it among grasses to be sown at Monticello.
