ALTAI ONION
Allium amphibolum
$2.00
Native to the region of the Altai mountains between Kazakhstan and Mongolia, land of Tuvan throat-singing, is this rather charming onion which bears in July its drumsticks of delicate rose-lilac flowers with dark red filaments. One of the delights of growing from seed is to start with this little speck of dormant life and end up with a unique plant that hails from half way around the world where one is unlikely to ever set foot (Richard Feynman never made it there). Growing 12-16 inches, it is a prolific bloomer but doesn't seem to volunteer about. Hardy to zone 4 at least.
