Product Name Price
Alternatives
Abelmoschus esculentus - STAR OF DAVID OKRA
$2.50
Similar to the Burgundy Okra listed elsewhere in the catalogue but larger in all respects to 7-8 feet.
Alternatives
Aethionema schistosum - TURKISH STONECRESS
$2.50
A charming little alpine with spicily fragrant pink flowers and glaucous evergreen foliage that seems quite hardy here. Wants full sun and good drainage. Few seeds. HP, zone 5.
Alternatives
Alcea rosea nana - DWARF HOLLYHOCK
$2.50
This small hollyhock, sent to me by a customer, is less than two feet tall but bears many large maroon double flowers the first year from seed if started early indoors. You would hardly guess it is a hollyhock from a distance.
Alternatives
Allium giganteum - GIANT ONION
$2.50
Probably the largest and showiest allium to 4-5 feet tall with softball sized dense inflorescences of bright lilac to purple. Native to Central Asia, it blooms in June and has long been used for fresh or dry cuts. Zone 4-5.

Alternatives
Allium schoenoprasum - CHIVES
$2.00
Seed from the named variety ‘Forescate’ with brighter rosy-pink flower-heads and bluer foliage as well. Zone 3.
Alternatives
Allium tanguticum - LAVENDER GLOBE LILY
$2.00
A handsome ornamental onion to about 16 inches in bloom, the many-flowered umbels are lavender with darker midribs and the leaves are flat. Zone 5 at least.
Alternatives
Alnus hirsuta - MANCHURIAN ALDER
$2.00
Related to and often growing in the cool moist situations that birches prefer, alders can be difficult to grow in our hot dry climate. This seed is from a selection made in South Dakota that is thriving in a difficult climate. Fast pyramidal growth, the long catkins in spring, and the tiny pinecone-like fruits in summer and fall recommend it. Zone 4.
Alternatives
Althea armeniaca - ARMENIAN MALLOW
$2.50
Seed from a variegated sport of this rather noble back of the border plant--don't know yet how true it will come from seed.
Alternatives
Anthericum ramosum - SPIDER PLANT
$2.50
Heretofore I have only listed this plant in the Alternatives section as I never had enough seed to offer it. This is an excellent and underutilized species (perhaps because it is often considered much less hardy than it actually is–likely zone 4) that is native to western and central Europe. It is a neat and elegant plant of the Lily Family that is mostly stem and flower rather in the manner of Gaura lindheimeri, but is much more persistent–I have had mine for well over 20 years. The starry white flowers are borne on 2-3 foot stems from July until fall above a tuft of basal foliage. HP.
Alternatives
Aquilegia c. nana - DWARF AMERICAN COLUMBINE
$2.50
Similar to the species listed under PRAIRIE FLOWERS but under one foot. Zone 3, few seeds.
Alternatives
Aquilegia fragrans - FRAGRANT COLUMBINE
$2.00
This seed comes from A. fragrans growing near blue A. vulgaris so can’t be sure what one might get–a fragrant blue columbine would be nice.
Alternatives
Atriplex hortensis - BRONZE ORACH
$2.50
Seed from an apparent cross of the red and yellow forms yielding an interesting bronze leaved plant. Don’t know how true it will come, but if it doesn’t meet your expectations you can always toss it in your salad–it has been popular as a pot herb since the 16th century.
